Family Sports Day 2011

We had a rather 'wet' start to our Family Sports Day on 2 April 2011. The event was postponed from 8am to 9am as the weather did not permit us to begin as scheduled. Nevertheless, our sporting and supportive children along with their parents, grandparents and other family members came as promised and made our Family Sports Day a truly memorable one. We started out with some warm-up exercises and fun dancercise. Teacher Zib and Wang Lao Shi managed to wow the crowd with their moves and everyone had fun moving to the beat.

2010 K1 & K2 Camp

December was a really busy month for all of us at Honey Tree. First was our Graduation cum Concert, then we had our Parent-Teacher meeting the following week. The week after that we had our very first Honey Tree Camp.

It was held from 18th to 19th December and the response from the parents were very positive. We had 13 participants and all the teachers were also involved. Some of the activities we did during the 2 days 1 night camp was some teambuilding games like lunch making competition and creating wearable art

We also brought the children to East Coast Park for a nice afternoon of cycling. After that the children were treated to some ice cream from McDonald’s.

The day ended with a barbeque back at the centre. Tents were also set up inside the centre to give the children the ‘camping’ feeling.

The next day was also a day full of activities and it continued till they were picked up at 1pm. The children also designed their own camp T-shirt using Fabric paint. At the end of the camp, the children went home wearing their proudly designed T-shirts.

New Smart Board Progamme

The children in our centre have embarked into a new learning journey - "The Smart Board Programme" since the beginning of this year.

They can learn the English language through animated pictures with music and sound. They can read animated story books with follow-up activities and learn maths and sciences in an interactive and interesting ways. Furthermore, the K-students can learn about the environmental science through the use of the Internet guided by their teachers.
The smart board programme also come with Chinese language learning. The programme includes the learning of the Chinese words, strokes writing, poems and reading. We found that our children show great interests in attending the programme and they are looking forward for every lesson. We are glad that their learning are further enhanced by using this state-of-the-art technology.

Honey Tree's 2010 Concert brought parents back to the oldies…….

Interspersed with animated dances and perfected marches, there was never a dull moment in the Honey Tree Child Care Centre End of Year Concert and Graduation Ceremony. A platform where Honey Tree Child Care Centre made used of to showcase its annual evening of extravaganza for the parents and grandparents of the students.
On 4 Dec 10, these students did just that by bringing old memories through the “Flavours of Singapore”. The event featured an adrenaline pumping routine performed by the children from the three Honey Tree Child Care Centres combined.

Besides fast numbers that jazzed up the ambiance in the auditorium, there were tender moments that tugged the heartstring of the audiences on the soft side. There were video clips that featured K2 graduates who expressed their gratitude so generously and so confidently, what they aspired to be in future. All of them have one common feeling - they missed the teachers and their friends in Honey Tree.

There were inspiring speeches given by two directors. Ms Janice Poon, speaking in English, illuminated the importance of parent – school bonding; drawing on examples of activities that the parents were so professionally involved. Mdm Chiang re-emphasised in Mandarin, the importance of adopting new technology in engaging and enriching a broad spectrum of young learners. The little MCs stole the night. The costumes and the probes fit the evening’s theme. The performers were just perfect.

Mdm Lim, grandmother of one K2 graduand commented, “I have attended a few of the graduation ceremonies, this year is special. It is timely for our children to know the hard work their parents had gone through. By participating it themselves, made them realized what their parents have done to arrive at what they are today.”

Indeed, together with our parents, Honey Tree Child Care Centres are determined to draw on one another’s strengths, to build on the collective wisdom to improve the well-being of our children to give them a solid foundation for the future.

2010 Charity Food Fair-Tasty Treats

We held our 1st ever Charity Food Fair-Tasty Treats of Asia, on 24 June 2010. Each class represented a country in Asia and the children had the opportunity to explore its culture and culinary delights. Countries represented were Japan, China, Philipines, Malaysia, India and Singapore. Food stalls were built and food demonstrations were carried out. The whole project lasted about 4 weeks and the children and teachers put in alot of effort in making this memorable day possible. The response from the children's parents and family members were overwhelming. All proceeds from the Food Fair was donated to the Singapore Children's Society.

Honey Tree Child Care Group held its yearly Family Day event on 27 February this year. Over 150 adults and children participated in this event. The highlights of the event include making healthy salad, fun exercises, games and races.

A Big Thank You to all the parents and grand-parents, who have brought a lot of laughter and fun to the little ones !!!

2009 Year End Concert

“Childcare centre has shown to be very beneficial for our children as it helps to promote their social, physical, intellectual and emotional development. Another key role is in enabling parents to engage in employment, education and training as well,” said Mdm Stella Chiang, the GM of Honey Tree Child Care Centre at the Year End Concert cum Graduation Ceremony 2009. These were the key points she made about the important role Honey Tree plays as a childcare provider.
The event was held on 3rd Dec 2009 where a total of 41 students from N1, N2 K1 and K2 classes participated. Even the PG children were not left behind.

Mdm Chiang presented graduation certificate to a total of ten K2 graduands in the evening. All of them have great aspirations and they thanked their teachers for the untiring effort and patience during their years in Honey Tree. The children were sad to leave Honey Tree but they promised that they would work hard moving forward. We know they sure will. These children have grown. Not only physically but as a total person - the moral part, the emotional part, the cognitive part and most importantly the self-confidence, the self confidence in wanting to achieve and to achieving it.

It is therefore not surprising in her closing speech, Mdm Chiang remembered the importance of parents as partner. She reiterated that parents are our “valued partners” and only with them working together, we can be successful in seeing our children grow. She thanked them for the support and cooperation over the years.

The theme for the concert was "World Around Us". All the children enjoyed themselves and they were so enthusiastic and proud about the whole event. It was indeed an enjoyable and wonderful evening for everyone of us !!!

"Bottle Up" - A volunteerous project work conducted by four secondary school's students. They are Faith Chia, Nur Atiqah, Chua Pei Xuan and Nurin Nazifa from Cedar Girls' Secondary School. They came to our Centre during June school holidays to raise awareness among young children about environmental problems and promote ways to take care of our Earth. Our students not only enjoyed their programme, they also learned about how to recycle plastic bottles as it is one of the main litter here in Singapore. Once again, a big thank you to them !

2009 Sports Cum Family Day

What an overwhelming response!! Even the weather was on our side. The rain that poured the afternoon before had washed away the hot, humid and saturated air and left us a perfect setting for our Sports cum Family Day. Attendance was not short. The majority of our children from Playgroup, N1, N2, K1 and K2 were present and participated. Their parents were there as well. The event did not begin in that morning. Our teachers have actually started preparation days ahead - the pomp-pomp dance; the cheer thyme and the logistics, just to name a few.

The running and the fun game races were very exciting but tense. Parents, children & even our very own teachers kept on egging & encouraging the participants. The atmosphere became more euphoric when honey tree cheers were heard by our cheerleaders- the honey tree children, accompanied by Teacher Rohani and Mdm Joyce Chiang. The event consisted of three races – running race, fun game race and parent-child game race. All were encouraged to participate in the events.

However for the parent-child game, it was based on first come first serve basis as participants were overwhelming. Both parent-child races were not easy to manoeuvre as parent support and team-work were required. Not only that, parents had to think of their children’s safety. This is where family bonding comes in. The two games were not only fun but competitive and challenging for the parents as well!

Delighted and proud winners went home with their prized trophies while those who did not win the race were not dejected. Every child received a token as well. More importantly, it was the family bonding that was encouraged. We proudly proclaimed - we achieved it.See you next year !!

Honey Tree Child Care Year End Concert saw the graduation of 6 kindergarten students on 13 Dec 08. The theme for the afternoon was “Honey Tree Work Out”. It was a good workout indeed. The afternoon saw 40 over children danced, sang and recited poems. They had not only brought applause and cheers but strong encouragement and support from their parents and relatives.
“It was a performance of high standard!” One parent said of the show. Many more parents recalled the Bhangrarobics dance and Chinese Kung Fu dance as entertaining.

The 2 Young emcees who were Honey Tree Graduants stole the show as well. They have displayed so much self-confidence and maturity.

There were no moments of low keys. The evening started with the 6 graduants speaking of themselves, their stay in Honey Tree and where they would go next. They have not forgotten to thank the teachers of Honey Tree for the care and patience as well.

In her opening speech, Madam Stella, the GM, reviewed her plan for next year. She said that Honey Tree will continue to enhance academics learning and will be adding more moral education program like reciting ancient poems and idioms as well as lessons on moral learning themes like “My Feelings” and “I Care & I Help”. “The emphasis here is on character building. Our children will become more rounded individuals with a strong foundation when they move on to primary school.” She reckoned that pre-school years are a critical period for children. They lay the foundation of formal schooling. It is therefore important to provide the best for them, right from the start of their educational journey.

In closing, Madam Stella encouraged all parents to provide feedback. She emphasized that parents are partners. Honey Tree needs to work hand in hand with them. She thanked them for their support and understanding all these years. She also took the opportunity to thank the children and her teachers for putting in the untiring effort to make the evening a resounding success.

It was indeed a memorable one for the children and parents of Honey Tree.

Mooncke Festival cum Family Night 2008

What a memorable evening for all of us ! A mid-autumn festival was organized by Honey Tree this time round at our own premises in conjunction with family night.
On 11th of September, our centre was lit up with colourful Chinese lanterns. The evening started off with a Chinese orchestra by our own parent’s volunteers, Mr and Mrs Cheng, together with our Chinese Language Teacher, Fei Lao Shi. Their impressive performance gave a great opportunity for our children to appreciate the traditional Chinese music and culture.
Thunderous applause was meant solely for our special guest, Ms Abigail Chay, an actress cum comedienne who tickled our bones with her hilarious acting as “Chang Er” (嫦娥). It was great to see that some parents were sporting enough to join in the antics of Ms Abigail. She really provided the atmosphere with comic relief.

Our students joined in the mood of the festive night as well. The N2 students recited a Chinese rhyme while the K2 and K1 students sang a song about the mooncake festival.Games for both parents and children, like “Peeling off the skin of the pomelos” and “Riddles” in English and Chinese were exciting and interesting.
Last but not least, before we bade farewell to one another,all of us walked around the neighbourhood with colourful and decorated lanterns !

Our students attending the Art & Craft enrichment class conducted by Kiddy Art were exposed to the concept created by Paul Klee, the famous Swedish mordern artist. They drew spontaneously, forming different line patterns and shapes to create an interesting oil pastel. Good communication skills help us to solve problems successfully and maintain good interpersonal relationships. This is as true for young children as it is for adults.

People of all ages can have trouble expressing what they think and feel. Sometimes we just find it difficult to find the right words. Sometimes a situation seems intimidating and we feel shy to say what we really feel. Sometimes we are afraid that others will make fun of us or reject us. All of these difficulties are particularly common with young children.

Similarly, it is important to recognize that communication is a two way process. The ability to listen is vital in effective interpersonal communication and is linked to being sensitive and empathetic with others. Again, some young children find it difficult to listen carefully.

A few simple rules can help young children to communicate effectively:
• Think before you speak
• Don't shout
• Speak clearly
• Tell the other person how you feel
• Say all you want to say
• Listen carefully

Activity That You Can Have With Your Child At Home :

This is a simple game that can be played anywhere and at any time. It produces a lot of laughter and children love it. BULLYING

Bullying is a problem in schools and playgrounds all over the world.The trauma of being bullied can persist for a long time - even for the rest of a child's life. This is particularly true if the child does not experience some resolution of the problem, or masters more varied and better coping mechanisms. The long term effects of bullying depend less on what actually occurs than on how the child learns to cope with the situation.Victims of bullying who think of themselves as somehow defective or deficient tend to cope less well than children who learn to understand that the problem resides in the bully or in a poor school situation that does not protect them. Similarly, children who feel anxious or terrorised are more likely to develop problems than children who learn how to avoid or diminish their fears and anxiety.Children should be encouraged to report bullying, whether it happens in school or outside. They may be reluctant to do this for fear of being victimised themselves, or because they think it is wrong to 'tell'. It is important to discuss this belief and to talk about how adults can help.It's also important to remember that, for every bullied child, there is a bully. Most bullies are unhappy and insecure, and they too need to learn better coping skills, in order to stop bullying and lead more successful lives.

Explain that bullying means threatening or hurting someone else or saying nasty things about them.

Make sure that they think of people who can help in different environments - teachers at school, a parent at home.

Choosing The Right Book

Know your child's interests at each stage of development. This will help you select appropriate reading materials. Below are some general guidelines in selecting books for the different age groups.

From birth to one year

Books with rhythmic language, rhymes and songs.
Board/plastic /cloth books with bright coloured (start with black, white and red for the very young), simple and clear pictures.
Books with pictures of familiar objects, eg. balls, animals, food or books about daily life.

Toddles : 1 - 3 years old

Simple, repetitive story lines and pictures.
Nursery rhymes and body movements, eg."I'm a little teapot...".
Simple concepts of numbers and sizes.
Books with simple activities like looking under the blanket, behind doors eg. Where's Spot? series.
Books with few words on each page, eg. alphabet and concept books or books that relate to familiar experiences or characters.
Participative books with surprises, eg. lift-the-flaps, pop-ups, touch & feel.

Reflection By Teacher Christina

Having worked with children from age groups 18 months to 6 years, children are my pride and joy. I remember vividly having started out as a playgroup teacher just after obtaining my Diploma in Pre-School Education (Teaching). I was assigned, immediately, to a group of 8 toddlers – most of whom were crying their eyes out on their first week at the centre.

However, one particular child, had a smile on her face despite clinging on to her father. Little Emma Chin (fictitious name), 18 months, although afraid of the unfamiliar surroundings, took to me immediately. When I approached her, she replied, “Teacher, teacher, carry”. Soon, I found out that Emma could hardly speak English as Mandarin and dialects were widely spoken at home. During her educational journey with me that year, she picked-up the English Language fast. Despite my being of non-Chinese ethnicity and speaking English at all times, Emma could understand and follow what was being taught or discussed in class. She stayed with me right through to Nursery 1, where she excelled in English, both written and oral, and finally on to Kindergarten 2. Feedback from her mother, Mrs Chin, “My husband and I, made it a point to converse only in English to our daughter because one fine day, Emma came home from school, giving instructions to us and her grandfather (who spoke only dialects) in English. Both of us were amazed at her use of the Language (both in diction and in grammar)”.

Nurturing Emma with tremendous love, understanding, patience and encouragement (which is crucial in child-development) has provided me with a great sense of achievement. Providing her with ample opportunities to converse in English as well as correcting her verbal mistakes every inch of the way has made Emma a far better child. Her vocabulary has extended through my encouraging her to read English books and allowing her to ask questions at all times. Through the story-telling sessions and the reinforcement as well as the explanation of difficult words has made Emma engross herself in books, whenever possible.

I am very proud to have had a total Chinese-speaking student who is now an eloquent speaker of English through my hard work and encouragement. Emma’s motivation and sheer determination to master a language has left a deep impression on me. She has provided me with lots of encouragement in my years of teaching.

Themes For Term Four

Dear Parents,

Our Theme for Term 4 is

"Let's Enjoy Nature".

We will cover topics like Plants, Paper, Water & Sand, Underground, Out In Space, Weather, Time, Light and Shadow.

Here are some ideas* that you can foster the concepts of these units at home :

Plants & Paper:

At mealtimes, identify various parts of plants that are eaten. For example, we eat the leaves of lettuce, the stem of celery, the root of a carrot, and so on.
Take a walk with your child and observe how many plants you can find that are cared for by people and how they are cared for.
Make origami with your child using old magazines.
Ask your child to name things that are made of paper at home (poster, calendars etc.)
Collect some empty tissue boxes or used toilet rolls and let your child build castle with them.
Choose some simple words and let your child select letters from newspapers to form target words.

Water & Sand :

Finding out about evaporation with your child by setting out a shallow pan of water and marking the water level each day.
Bubbles made with an eggbeater in a container of soapy water are fun for children of all ages.
Bring your child to an outing at the beach and have sand play.
If you have some marbles or stones at home, count the number of marbles or stones with your child. Let your child observe and talk about them.
Look for items that are made from rocks or stones at home with your child (e.g. granite flooring; vase and so on).
Show some real jewellery that you have to your child and talk about what they are made of.

Underground and Out In Space :

Observe any ant near your house. Trace and talk about its nest with your child.
Have your child talk about the feelings when you travel with him/her through MRT tunnels or journey in a car through a long tunnel.
Take turns to name the objects which you can find underground with your child (e.g. gas pipes, electrical wires, train, rabbit etc..)
Look at the sky in the night time and let your child name the things that he/she can see (moon, star, clouds, lightning, aeroplanes, birds etc.)
Look at the moon at various days of a month and talk about the different phases of the moon (from crescent moon to full moon).

Time, Light & Shadow

Plan a simple daily timetable with your child and share it with your child your daily timetable at work.
Recite the time at every meals that you have with your child.
Make shadows with your hands in your child's bedroom before bedtime and ask him/her to guess what you have made.
Play a blindfold game with your child and let him/her talk about the things that frighten him/her in the dark.

Dear Parents,

Our Main Theme for Term 3 is

"Creatures, Creatures, Everywhere !"

We will be covering insects, creepy crawlies, pets, sea creatures, farm & wild animals in this Term.

Here are some suggestions* to bring these units into your home :

Take a walk with your child and see how many insects and spiders you can find. use a clean jar with a lid to observe the creature close up. However, please release them after the observation.

To develop fine motor skills, provide magazines and newspapers for your child to cut or tear out pictures of animals. Create an animal alphabet book or a collage to hang in your child's bedroom.

Visit a pet shop to observe some pets with your child. At the same time note all of the pet supplies available.

To promote environmental awareness, tell your child where do milk, eggs, cheese come from when you are with your child in a supermarket or market.

Plan a trip with your child to the zoo, bird park or crocodile farm etc..

Set a kitchen timer for three to five minutes. Then look out the window and see how many birds you can see. For each bird, drop a button in a jar. When the timer goes off, count how many buttons are in the jar. This game will strengthen your child's observation skills and increase his understanding of number concept

Fun With Colours :

You can make almost any meal entertaining by occasionally adding a small amount of food colouring to one of your food items.

To develop observation skills, look around your house with your child for red, blue and yellow items. Ask questions such as "How many red objects can you find in each room?".

It would be great fun for your child to make colour dough at home. Here is the recipe :

2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, 1 cup of water, 2 tablespoons cooking oil and a few drops of food colouring. Mix and knead to a dough.

Clothings

To promote independence, begin by placing your child's clothes in a low drawer allowing easy access to the clothes.

To make outings more exciting, encourage your child to select clothes at night that can be worn the next day.

If your child has doll clothes, fill the kitchen sink or a tub with soapy water, and let your child wash the doll clothes. This will help your child become aware of the care of clothes.

Healthful Food

At mealtimes, have your child identify the foods being served that are meats / vegetables /dairy products etc..

Encourage your child to prepare instant pudding with you for snack.

Browse through newspaper ads or magazines and have your child identify meats / vegetables /dairy products etc..

To help develop memory and language skills, ask your child which vegetables or fruit he tried during the week.

Let your child help you prepare salads or fruit juice at home :

Vegetable Dip : 1 cup of yogurt, 1 cup of mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon of dill weed, 1 teaspoon seasoned salt. Mix all ingredients and chill. Serve with fresh raw vegetables.

People at Work

Page through magazines with your child. Discuss equipment and materials that are used in various occupations. Questions such as the following can be asked to stimulate thinking skills : "Who might use a computer to perform a job!"; "What occupations involve the use of a cash register?".

Let your children help or watch you open the mail. Give your child the "junk mail" to play with.

Have your child dictate a letter to grandparents or cousin. Take your child to the post office and mail it.

To ensure your family's safety, talk with your child about what would happen in the event of a fire at your house. You can do this calmly, without frightening your child.

Practice taking a fire escape route from the child's bedroom, the kitchen, the living room and other rooms of your home.

On The Move /Robots & Machines

Talk to your child the next time when you need to pump petrol for your car. They are many different types of trucks and cars to observe at the petrol station.

Provide soapy water and a sponge and let you help you wash the family car.

Count the wheels on the different types of transportation. Semi-trucks have several, while a unicycle has only one.

Show your child a lever function by using a pair of scissors, a bottle opener, a stapler etc..

Talk to your child about pulleys that can be found at home, e.g. blinds.

Show your child examples of gears at home, eg. a clock, bicycles, drill etc..

Have fun exploring concepts related to the above themes !

Themes For Term One

Dear Parents,

Our theme for Term 1 is "I am Special".

We will cover topics related to All Abount Me, I Love My Family /Relatives /Friends, My Toys, I like Playground, My House, My School, My Feelings, I Can & I help etc..

Here are some ideas* that you can foster the concepts of some of these topics at home :

All Abount Me :

Parents can talk to the child about the name, gender and birthday of all the members in the family. Different characteristics of your child can also be highlighted by making comparisons between family members.

Parents can talk about the five senses with your child, for example, ask your child to cover his/her ears and ask her to guess what you are talking.

Sense of touch can also be enhanced through the activity of touching objects of different texture, for example, compare bewteen a sponge and a bar of soap by pressing them.

Mealtime is a good time to highlight the function of the senses of smell and taste.

Parents can bring your child to the library or surf the internet to look for information on how our digestive system works.

Get your child to use parts of his/her body to show its function, for example, play a game of pouring water into a bowl or a cup then ask about the part of body used to do this activity.

Walking, running and kicking a ball are some activities that can be done to show the function of legs. A mirror can be used to name different parts of the body.

My House / My Toys /I like playground

Talk with your child the safety rules at home

Talk with your child the safety and social rules in the playground

Let your child take responsibility of his/her personal belongings (eg. keep his/her toys away after play; put-on his/her own shoes etc.)

I Love My Family /Relatives /Friends

Read/tell stories that will cultivate positive values to your child (eg. to be filial to the parents)

Parents can talk to the child about the family tree and the name of their relatives. You can begin by looking through family photographs with your child. While doing this discuss family tradition and customs. You can encourage your child to dictate a letter to you to write to a grandparent or other relative.

Talking with your child about the name and different characteristics of their friends will encourage parent-child communication

My Feelings

Talking with your child about your feelings will encourage parent-child communication. Tell your child what things can make you feel happy or sad in varous ways. Then ask your child to share some feelings. Create a "feeling collage" with your child through drawing or using discarded magazines.

I Can & I Help

Assign some simple tasks /roles for your child to take on, for example, water the plants or feed the pet daily.

Talking with your child what does he/she like to do. Help building your child's confidence by telling something positive about him/her (eg. He is special because he is helpful)

Parents can be the role model of your child to cultivate the values of "helpful" and "caring".

Providing Healthy Diet To Our Children

Dear Parents,

We understand your concern of wanting to get your child off to a healthy start with good eating habits. We also want the children at our Centre to grow big, strong and healthy. Hence, we have sought help from the Dietitians of Changi General Hospital to assess our 4-week-cycle food menu. The standard against which our menu was evaluated is based on the “Guide to Healthy Meals in Child Care Centre, by the Health Promotion Board of Singapore”.

After the evaluation, the Dietitians commended that our food menu is “…very comprehensive and well thought of…”. However, in order to ensure that our food menu is balanced and the meals served meet the nutritional requirement of the children, we have worked closely with the Dietitians to improve our food menu as follows :

*Introduce wholemeal bread to the children.
*Increase the serving of vegetables for the meals.
*Use unsaturated cooking oil and margarine (brands like knife peanut oil /Flora /Meadowlea)
*Remove some of the unhealthy foods such as doughnuts
*Replace the Kaya bread on some days with other varieties.

The next time when you are in our Centre, please feel free to view our new 4-week-cycle food menu, and/or take a look at the kind of foods served to your child ! Truly yours.

Benefits of Young Children Using Learning Corners

Dear Parents,

Our year is getting off to an exciting start. The children are getting acquainted and becoming comfortable with our Centre.

We understand that young children learn best in an active environment that is planned to match their level of development. As such, our program is carefully designed to provide developmentally appropriate activities for each child.

One of the special features of our Centre is the many learning corners that are planned around the Centre. In the corners, children use language to accompany their activities hence expanding their vocabulary. Some other positive benefits of young children using learning corners include making choices and carrying out plans to completion. Their social skills will also be enhanced as they work with others.

Some of the corners in our Centre have a long history in early childhood programs. These include Dramatic, Construction, Art and Reading corners. There are other corners that are set-up for two to three weeks that focus on a particular topic. In Term One, two such corners, namely the “Bath” corner and “Puppet House” were set-up to enhance integrated learning of the master theme - “I am Special”.

For Term Two, the master theme is “World Around Us”. In-line with this, more special corners will be set-up at different stages within the period of Term Two. Just to name a few, they are “My Wardrobe”; “My Tool Box”; “Shopping Fun”; “At the Clinic” etc..

A Visit By Police Officers

Our students had a great fun when two police officers visited our Center on 5 May 2008. They demostrated the art of self-defence and explained the importance of safety awareness. Besides learning about the work scopes and responsibilities of a policeman, our students had a chance to view and touch the handcuff, baton and whistle. They also went into the police car and listen to the siren.

Thank you the police officers for conducting such a meaningful session for our students !

Honey Tree Year End Concert cum Graduation Celebration 2007 saw the biggest turn-out over the years. Held at SAFRA Club Tampines, the afternoon was filled with scrumptious food, dances, speeches and songs, courtesy of our NI, N2, K1, K2 students and all the staff of Honey Tree. It was certainly an afternoon to remember for the parents and relatives who turned up in full support of their children’s year end performance. The afternoon was particularly memorable for the four K2 students who were graduating from the centre as well.

Honey Tree teachers and children’s effort in creating an unforgettable afternoon could clearly be seen from the line up of exciting performances, costumes as well as the backdrop decorations. “The preparations really depict the theme,"Fairly Tales and Aesop’s Fables" well,” said one of the parents of the theme for the afternoon.

Mr Cheng, who attended the afternoon event with his wife who was about to deliveryher second baby said, “I am so happy to have sent my daughter to Honey Tree. Lian Xin (their 4 year-old N1 daughter) has gained so much from the Centre”.

Another parent, Mdm Normizah said, “I was excited and was worried initially that Friki (her son who was in K1) would not perform but was so relief to see him so steady and did so well on stage.
”

The Management & Staff of Honey Tree wish to thank all the parents for their kind support for making this yearly event a great success.

Family Day On 3 Nov 2007

It was the first time Honey Tree organized a Family Day event for our children and their family members. It was held on a bright, sunny Saturday morning at East Coast Park on the 3rd of November 2007.

We were quite apprehensive initially as to whether the continuous torrential rain that week would dampen it. We were also quite worried and disappointed with the poor response by the parents. In fact, we had been encouraging and convincing the parents to join us and enticing the children about the many games, food, drinks, door gifts and prizes that could be won!

Anyway, no matter rain or shine, or the ‘not so overwhelming response’ by the parents, we were still all prepared and geared up to carry out our mission :

“To enhance family bonding and to have fun !”

There were five games in total like ‘Support Your Child’, ‘I am Always With You’ and ‘Daddy! Mummy! I Am Brave’, to name a few. We were astounded and surprised that most of the family members were very ‘sporting’! They willingly participated in all the games that were carried out! The most interesting game that all of us unanimously agreed was ‘I Can See You Through My Heart’. This is a game where it challenged parents to recognize their children’s voices. The parents had to locate their children while being blindfolded. The scene was indeed very heartwarming and endearing and nearly made some of us shed our tears!

We were glad that our children and their family members were having a great time mingling and chatting with other family members. We were very encouraged and overwhelmed with the support given by the children and their families who attended this Family Day event. We hope that this Family Day event had been meaningful to the families and their loved ones and that the next Family Day would be more fun, exciting and interesting than this year. See you again in 2008!

Special Phonics & Reading Programme

Commencing from 1st February 2008, the children in our Centre have an opportunity to attend a new enrichment programme using special needs techniques and methods, namely :

“Special Reading and Phonics Programme”

This unique programme is specially designed and conducted by the Principal of Sunshine kidz, Mrs Sheehan-Oliveiro Betty Caroline. It has been proven to be an effective way to teach reading.

Over 180 research studies to date have proven that phonics is the BEST WAY to teach reading to all students. They also have shown that phonics is the ONLY WAY to teach reading to students with dyslexia, a condition related to poor reading, and other learning disabilities.
Some children have auditory discrimination or visual perception problems. Some of these symptoms include,
1. Spatial confusion - unable to differentiate left-right, on self, other, or paper;
2. Confuses letter pairs as b-d, m-w, p-q. Confuses words such as was-saw, on-no.

Mrs Sheehan-Oliveiro Betty Caroline of Sunshinekidz suggested the following exercises to help improve directionality and reduce reversals:

Simplify tasks so only one new discrimination is made at a time.

Make each simple discrimination automatic before the next one is introduced. Overteach 'b", then overteach 'd", before presenting both together.

Each discrimination that causes repeated errors should be worked with by itself until the problem is overcome.

Trace, then write, the confused letter or word and pronounce it as written.

Use short frequent practice periods. Lengthen the time between practice sessions as the material is retained.

If the child is confused about his own left/right, use a ring, watch, ribbon or band on his writing arm. Color cue side of desk or paper or word as a starting place.

Gradually increase the difficulty of material to discriminate. If errors are made, go back to simpler practice.
